Tips for SMEs- Maintaining Your Receipts

Posted on 11th July 2018

Maintaining Your Receipts

In order for your accountant to help you proactively and ensure that your expenses are correctly claimed, take some time to look after your receipts.

By their nature, receipts are fiddly, hard to read and are often received by the carrier bag full – sending them to us like this will mean time spent sorting and filing, before we can proceed with the work you have instructed us to do.

Instead of sending your accountant a bag full of coffee stained faded receipts, take the time to sort and file them.

Consider the following;

• Photocopying them so the print is clear.
• Scanning and filing them – but ensure you have adequate backup systems in place.
– HMRC will now allow electronic copies.
• Create a spreadsheet where you can list the expenses by date/ supplier, cost and then stapling the receipts – use a column for notes relating to the expense.

Ultimately we are here to help you, and if it’s easier for you to send us that bag of receipts, we will happily sort and file them, but consider this;

Money spent on paying for a bookkeeper to sort and file your receipts could be better spent on other services to help your business grow for example management accounts, where we can help you to closely monitor the current financial position of your business, planning for the future and helping you to achieve your long term goals.
