Following a letter received by an MJB Avanti client this week, we would like to make business owners aware that there is a scam relating to the Furlough scheme.
The MJB Avanti team have raised this with HMRC, so it should now be logged as a verified scam.
Look out for letters claiming to be from HMRC regarding a Furlough over claim.
The letter looked legitimate and included correct company details such as reference numbers but the key difference was the failure to use a forward slash (/) in the employers PAYE reference number. As with most scams, it is the tiniest detail such as a grammatical or spelling error that is often the giveaway.
As with all communications ‘from’ HMRC, don’t disregard it, but do treat it with caution. We would suggest that instead of using the details on the letter to contact HMRC, you contact your accountant or head to the Gov website and either call a registered HMRC number or use the live chat service where they will be able to confirm whether or not the letter is legitimate.
