Back in spring 2016, Marco Spina and Ian Matthews thought it would be an interesting idea to exploit their passion in live music and DJing, and organised a small-scale music festival in Woodbridge, Suffolk. After a very successful event and a follow-up festival that autumn, the pair decided to make the business “official” in 2017 and the company myFestival was born.
“We were surprised by the momentum and positive feedback from both the public and the businesses involved” says Ian, “it was a natural progression to set up as a company, and it made dealing with venues, suppliers, and sponsors much easier”.
As a side project, Marco decided to pursue another passion of his, radio. eurobeatradio.net now broadcasts 24 hours a day on the internet, with a mixture of live and pre-recorded content. With listeners all around the world, it not only provides both local and distant DJs with a great station to play their music, but also provides a platform to live-stream the myFestival music events world-wide.
The pair now run two festivals – SpringFest and SummerFest – every year in Woodbridge, and their reputation has resulted in requests and involvement in events around the county. They regularly call on a selection of local bands, DJs, and sound engineers, and facilitate hiring their services out as entertainment packages.
“A big part of our events has always been the silents discos, where we have three DJs playing simultaneously and everyone wears bespoke wireless headphones” enthuses Marco. “We originally held one to get around the issue of noise disturbance to local residents, but it was far more popular than we expected. The events appeal to all ages, we regularly get dance floors packed with folk of all ages, the popularity just keeps growing”.
Ian and Marco now run mySilentDisco as an off-shoot brand to the main business, specialising in both hiring silent disco equipment and fully managing the running of events. This not only happens in the UK, but recently has also included events in Marco’s home-country of Sicily. “Silent discos aren’t as well known in Sicily as they are in the UK” explains Marco, “but the club scene is huge over there, so we expect the events to do really well once the word gets out”.
Recently the boys won a contract with Fred Olsen, the international cruise liner company, to supply silent disco headphones to their ships. They were up against the larger and more established companies in the UK, so are naturally very pleased with the contract.
As Ian says, “It’s great to think our headphones will be sailing around the world!”
